Jon and Roy bring their Holiday Special to Salt Spring Island to kick off the holiday spirit and festivities by celebrating some of the west coast’s best talent! The Holiday Special is in it’s 9th year and is a revue style event with other bands performing short sets before Jon and Roy. Always a diverse and talented line up of musicians, this years is no exception. Joining our hosts are indie-pop darling Ashleigh Ball from Hey Ocean, live ambient/funky electronic band Astrocolor and blues-rooted, soul-rocker Jesse Roper performing a solo acoustic set.

Jon and Roy
The Road Ahead Is Golden arrives at the perfect juncture for the trio, with motivation at an all time high and efficiency in the studio, the songs almost recorded themselves. Having made a career out of embracing the unexpected, The Road Ahead Is Golden meaning morphed over time as it did in its creation and marks a return to organic operations for the group.

The trademarks of previous Jon and Roy releases include Middleton’s acoustic guitar and Vizer’s guardrail groove all in abundance on The Road Ahead Is Golden, but changes are evident. Vizer, a put congas back on the equipment list, and Middleton is joined by other voices including members of Current Swell on ‘The Better Life.’

There’s a simplicity to the music of Jon and Roy that makes what they do sound effortless. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Jesse Roper (solo acoustic)
Jesse Roper approaches his profession the same way he would make a mixtape. With barriers down and volume up.
That philosophy is apparent on Access to Infinity, his upcoming third full-length due January 12th, 2018. Roper describes the anticipated album as “an evolved sound,” one that brings to a boil a disparate set of influences.

The B.C. singer-songwriter’s innate and impressive musical talent has served him well in recent years. It has given the flexibility to play with soul icon Booker T. Jones, rock veteran Colin James, and blues belter Beth Hart, then turn around and headline nightclubs and festivals to younger audiences, and look perfectly comfortable in each scenario. Adventuresome doesn’t properly describe Roper as an artist, because when the guitar-wielding dynamo sets out to accomplish something, there’s no telling where his mind will wander, or when his energy will wane.

Astrocolor (full band)
Astrocolor perform and record live electronic music, recalling the Chemical Brothers, Air, and St. Germain. The band plays on the edges of funky house, Balearic, breakbeat, and ambient.

Astrocolor have performed at seminal western Canadian festivals including Rifflandia and Song & Surf, and are quickly becoming dance tent favorites. The band formed in 2015 and are based in Victoria, BC, Canada.

Ashleigh Ball
Ashleigh Ball is celebrated Canadian musician and voice actor. Best known as the magnetic frontwoman for Canadian indie pop band Hey Ocean, she is proud to release her first solo EP Gold in You. Gold in You is a distinct departure from Ball’s Indie roots towards a more bold and mature sound. Featuring songs like Crazy and Lover, the EP explores themes of asynchronous relationships and the paradox of wanting two different lives at once: stable vs. chaotic or reality vs. dream. The EP was written over the past two years while Hey Ocean was on hiatus and demonstrates the full range of Ball’s vocal abilities both through gripping emotional ballads and electronic and R&B inspired tracks.
